Parkinson’s disease

We can encompass several diseases into the Parkinson’s Syndrome (also called extra-pyramidal syndrome) who are provoqued by some medicines such as :

  • Antipsychotic (like Haloperidol)
  • Metoclopramide (which is an antiemetic)

Every disease that affects the ganglia of the base will lead to a triad of symptoms (called the parkinson triad). This triad includes three symptoms

This is a diagram illustrating the ganglia of the base which are brain cells
  1. akinesia (which is the absence of movement) and bradykinesia (slow movements)
  2. Rigidity
  3. asymmetrical resting tremor and loss of posture reflexes

What is the cause of Parkinson ?

The cause of the Parkinson’s disease stay unknown. The ganglia of the base keep destroying themselves spontaneously.

In the Parkinson’s disease we can see a loss in the dopaminergic neurons localized in the Locus Niger. After the dopaminergic neurons, others neurons are being destroyed which cause a loss in the neuronal communication.

It is said that toxins, mushrooms and hard drugs are causing the destruction of the neurons and therefore the Parkinson’s disease but we don’t have many evidence of that.

The first caracteristic in the Parkinson’s disease is the appearance of The Lewy Body

Clinical Manifestations

Tremorsat rest, disappears when moving
Mostly the body members, sometimes the jaw
low frequency
unilateral
very characterstic
Akineto-rigid syndromeAkinesia : slow down during the initiation of the movement
Bradykinesia : slow down during the execution of the movement
Freezing of gait
gear wheel
OthersIntellectual confusion (loss of memory…)
Dementia
Depression, sleep trouble
Constipation
